There is much optimism amongst the scientific community that we are on the verge of something revolutionary, and with good reason. The Terrestrial Planet Finder (TPF) hopes to find habitable planets outside our solar system. Currently from Earth based telescopes we are restricted to identifying only the larger 'Jupiter like' gassy planets in far off solar systems. But the TPF is a space telescope and will be far above our turbulent atmosphere and equipped with sophisticated state-of-the-art imaging technologies. Unfortunately in 2006 NASA cancelled this project due to budgetary constraints.
